Project Overview

Thorold Tunnel is an underwater passageway that was originally installed between 1965 and 1967. The tunnel carries Highway 58 underneath the Welland Canal.
It is 840m in length and contains 2 separate tubes, one for each opposing directions of traffic, accommodating traffic and pedestrians to travel beyond and through the waterway.
Within the tunnel itself, ventilation is designed to manage winds and airflow throughout the passageway. During this project LCI was contracted to replace the damaged precast panels with temporary steel and decking pads to improve the airflow within the underground tunnel.
